BHMA® Product Numbering System

The BHMA® product numbering system is a standardized method used to identify and classify builders’ hardware products. Each ANSI/BHMA standard includes an explanation of the product numbering code specific to that category of hardware. The system uses a five-digit number preceded by a prefix letter, for example, B52131.

  • The prefix letter indicates the BHMA Product Section responsible for the hardware.
  • The first numeral denotes the base material of the product. The default number ‘0’ allows manufacturers to use an optional material that meets the standard’s performance requirements.
  • The second number identifies the type of product.
  • The third and fourth numerals specify the function of the item.
  • The fifth number indicates the product’s performance grade.

For instance, using the example B52131:

  • B = Product Section for cabinet hardware hinges
  • 5 = Stainless steel
  • 2 = Cabinet knob
  • 13 = Back mounted
  • 1 = Grade One

Thus, the product is a Grade 1, back-mounted stainless steel cabinet knob. The specific meanings of the numerical codes (e.g., 13 = back mounted) can be found in the relevant ANSI/BHMA standard, such as A156.9 for cabinet hardware.

To ensure clarity and consistency, it is recommended to specify building hardware products by their BHMA® product number, avoiding confusion over brand names, performance standards, or product grades.
